SJNA Mourns the Passing of William Ray “Bill” Hummel
It is with great sadness and a heavy heart that the SJNA community shares the news of the passing of William Ray “Bill” Hummel, Class of 1968, who died on May 13, 2025, at the age of 75. A native of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and a longtime resident of Las Vegas, Nevada, Bill was a former Board Member, a generous donor, and a dear friend to many within our community.
Bill and his wife, Susan, demonstrated extraordinary commitment to the mission and future of St. John’s Northwestern Academies. Their philanthropic spirit reached the Life-Giving level of the Jacobson Society, a testament to their lasting impact and generous legacy.
Most recently, they were the sole donors responsible for the complete refurbishment of the historic pipe organ in Nobel Victory Memorial Chapel, a beloved symbol of faith and tradition on campus that had gone silent for over a decade. The chapel was Bill’s favorite place on campus, and this gift restored not only the powerful instrument but also the spirit of worship and music that resonates so deeply with the Academy community.
A man of deep faith, Bill inspired those around him with his quiet strength and generous heart. Despite health challenges, including complications from diabetes, he never let adversity diminish his positivity or his desire to help others. Even when driving became difficult, he remained connected, always making the effort to stay in touch with friends, fellow alumni, and the school he loved. He lived life gracefully, never complained, and remained a steadfast source of encouragement to all who knew him.
Bill’s joy for life was evident in the time he spent with others, whether enjoying dinner and laughter with his wife, Susan, sharing moments with SJNA Alumni at Top Golf, or simply making time for a call to talk about the Academy. He was always a gentleman—steadfast, kind, and full of quiet strength. His faith was his foundation; he lived out his calling with purpose and clarity.
He was predeceased by his parents, Alice and Edward Hummel, and is survived by his loving wife, Susan, and their children, Rich and Kristen. Our deepest sympathies go out to them and all who loved him.
Bill’s light will continue to shine in the lives he touched and the legacy he leaves behind. The SJN community mourns his loss and honors the life of a man who lived with heart, humility, and unwavering devotion.
